Orthodontic FAQ

What is an Orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a dental specialist, who spent additional years in training to straighten teeth, correct bite and jaw growth, and improve the overall health of patient’s occlusion (bite) and facial structures. Dr. Ng is highly educated and trained in orthodontics! She received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery, as well as Master of Science in Orthodontics.

When should i see an Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than 7 years old. Dr. Ng can evaluate your child’s oral hygiene and monitor your child’s development. Dr. Ng will determine if early orthodontic treatment is needed to avoid any future growth and dental problems.

What is the difference between braces & Invisalign® clear aligners?

Braces are fixed brackets on your teeth that Dr. Ng uses to straighten your teeth and correct your bite. We offer metal and clear braces, which both you can switch out fun tie colors at your visit! You can also choose clear color ties to keep your braces simple. Your visits to have your color ties changed out and braces adjusted are about every 6-8 weeks. The nice thing about braces is that it stays on your teeth and your orthodontist does most of the work (You might have to wear rubber bands though, we’ll discuss this later)!

Clear aligners (Invisalign®/3M™ Clarity™) are removable trays that can align your teeth and fix your bite. The trays are to be worn 22 hours a day, during the day and night time. You’ll switch out the trays every 7 - 14 days, depending on the prescription given to you by your orthodontist. The trays are to be taken out when you’re eating or drinking anything but water. This is a popular choice for patients who want an esthetic treatment with the convenience of having a removable appliance. You can enjoy eating the same foods as you did before, and you’ll be able to brush and clean your teeth easily! Your orthodontist sees you every 8-10 weeks to make sure that you are wearing your aligners and your teeth are moving correctly.

How long do I have to wear my braces or clear aligners for?

The amount of time in either braces or Invisalign®/3M™ Clarity™ clear aligners depends on the complexity of your teeth and jaw. Every smile is different! Simple treatments can take about 6 to 12 months, while more complex cases can take about 24 to 30 months. It is best to have an orthodontic consultation with your doctor!

Do braces or Invisalign® hurt?

Having your braces adjusted or switching out your Invisalign® clear aligners do not hurt but rather you’ll feel some tightness for a couple of days, as your teeth, cheeks, and gums get used to the new adjustment.

Do I have to wear rubber bands?

If Dr. Ng needs to correct your bite, then you will need to wear rubber bands (elastics)! Our team will show you how to wear them and let you know how often to wear them. We’ll make sure you’re comfortable with taking your rubber bands (elastics) in and out at every visit.

Can I play sports or play instruments with braces?

Yes, you can still continue playing sports with braces! We recommend a moldable mouthguard to be worn when you play sports. These mouthguards can easily be purchased on Amazon, Target, or at your local sporting goods store. As your teeth moves, you can remold your mouthguard to ensure comfort and proper protection.

Playing an instrument with braces will take some adjustment but braces will not prevent you from participating in school activities. Dr. Ng will make sure you are comfortable with your braces!

How often do I have to brush and floss with braces?

We recommend that you brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day (morning and night) to keep your teeth and gums healthy and clean. Brushing and flossing your teeth daily will help keep food from getting stuck between your teeth and to prevent puffy gums and cavities! We will supply you with the necessary tools (tooth brush, floss, floss threader, etc.) to help you properly brush and floss! We always take the time to show you how to properly care for your braces and keep your teeth clean.

Do I still need to see my dentist every 6 months with braces?

Yes, absolutely! We want to make sure your teeth are clean and free of cavities! We also want to make sure your gums are healthy and free of gingivitis. Seeing your dentist every 6 months (or more often if recommended) will help you achieve a healthy smile. Your orthodontist will work closely with your dentist to make sure you’re on a hygiene plan that is right for you!
